MISSION STATEMENT:

The intention of the ensemble class is to have a fun and empowering experience through music.  Over my 20+ years as a professional musician and teacher, I've observed that playing music in groups is one of the most fun things in life and I wanted to create that experience for my community.  I currently play in a Sufi music ensemble called Falsa where improvisation is a key element of the music.  Through my years in Falsa, teaching musical improvisation in particular has become a passion of mine.

FLYER:

Music Improv and Composition Ensemble Class

M.I.C.E class is a weekly bring your own instrument music ensemble class for students ages 7 to 17 who can play simple melodies in time to a recording.  Any instrument is welcome, including winds, strings (plucked or bowed), percussionists, pianists and vocalists!

Classes will be kept to 9 students or less.

Students will be guided through a new piece from an international repertoire of traditional or student suggested music every 2 weeks to 1 month.  Each piece will be analyzed as a group to explore the musical world of that piece.  As a piece is learned, students will move towards creating new music in an ensemble context using devices from that piece, thereby improving their skills in both music and cooperation.  The instructor, Tom Deis has a degree in music education from Berklee College of Music and over 20 years of teaching experience.  Tom is committed to keeping classroom dynamics engaging and supportive.

Weekly classes begin 10/23/25, and will continue on Thursdays at 19 Main st Accord, NY from 4:15-5:15 at $23 per student.  Please contact deisthomas@gmail.com or text 732-325-4785 to join, late additions welcome!  An e-mail list will be notified if class is off that week.  Feel free to reach out with any questions, including inquiries about adult classes and new class times and locations!
